Shakes, sundaes, ice cream cookie sandwiches and 24 flavors of house-made ice cream are on the menu at Betty Rae’s Ice Cream. The shop will open in Waldo March 25 at 7140 Wornall Road, in the former Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt space.
Owners David Friesen and his wife, Mary Nguyen transformed the space by making old yogurt dispensers into activity hubs for kids, creating an ice cream cone mural on a wall near the entry and adding a window that looks into the kitchen.
When I stopped by Betty Rae’s Ice Cream for a preview, David was making the shop’s signature waffle cones. Each cone is individually made by hand and pressed in a Belgian-style waffle cone maker. Biting into its lightly browned shell, you’ll notice the consistency of the cone isn’t brittle. It’s soft, buttery and nearly cake-like.
Betty Rae’s ice cream varies from traditional flavors like mint chocolate chip, vanilla bean and cookies and cream to nontraditionals including jasmine green tea (pictured), Thou Mayest coffee and pineapple Thai basil. Dairy-free sorbets and coconut milk based ice creams are also available. Scoops range from $2.50-4.50.
The shop also includes a freezer with grab-and-go ice cream and ice cream cookie sandwiches ($4.50). Pints are $5.75 and quarts are $8.50.
Get in for a scoop as soon as they open March 25!
Betty Rae’s hours are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
