Whenever snacktime comes around, I’m always stuck in a sweet/salty dilemma. For example, a simple chips vs. chocolate decision will have me staring at the cupboard for 3o minutes. And don’t get me started on the inner debate between candy and popcorn at the movie theater. The agony.
But now the snack struggle is over. That’s because I put all my favorite sweet and salty treats in a creamy, Nutella fudge-swirled milkshake. Or as I also like to call it, a SNACKSHAKE.
That’s right. I’m talking pretzels, Cracker Jacks and potato chips. But those are just the toppings. To start, you’ll need to the makings for a great milkshake – just whole milk and vanilla ice cream. I used AE Dairy‘s Whole Milk instead of lighter milk to achieve a thicker shake. (Plus, each serving of AE Dairy’s Whole Milk provides eight grams of natural protein so there’s an added health benefit.)
Before blending the ice cream and milk, I added a handful of pretzels, then blended it all together until the mixture was smooth and the pretzel bits were small. It might seem like a minor detail, but the pretzels make all the difference in the taste and texture of the shake. It adds just the right amount of crunch and salt to coincide with the ice cream.
During recipe testing I considered sticking with the pretzel milkshake. But something felt like it was missing…you know, that decadence factor. That’s when it hit me. Nutella! Swirls of it. Rich like hot fudge, but better (obviously) because NUTELLA!
Making it is simple: just whisk together Nutella, AE Heavy Whipping Cream, corn syrup and vanilla. When you’re ready to serve, drop in alternating layers of the shake and spoonfuls of Nutella fudge in a glass. Then, take a spoon and stir to distribute “swirls” of nutella fudge throughout the shake.
Presentation is everything here. So toss on those Cracker Jacks like calories don’t count! For the rim, roll the edge of the cup in Nutella fudge and then roll it in crushed potato chips.
Pro tip: this snackshake is not one for sipping. So ditch the straw and go straight for a spoon (or a shovel).
